Create Great Community: OutPro: Rise Up Educate & Empower
OutPro is an LGBTQ+ professional group that promotes a welcoming culture in the West Michigan Business Community for LGBTQ+ professionals and allies. OutPro offers opportunities for both social and professional networking through programming and gatherings at various venues in the community.
The focus of this OutPro forum is Education. We will be discussing the LGBTQ+ talent pipeline that will matriculate into the West Michigan workforce in the coming years. Our session will explore the following questions: (1) What are educators seeing and hearing from young professionals at schools? (2) How can we help prepare you prepare your organization to be an inclusive, affirming space for the future workforce.

Meet the Speakers
DL McKinney, Director, Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center at Grand Valley State University
D.L. (they/them) is a Detroit native turned GVSU “Laker for a Lifetime” Grand Rapids resident. With a work history that is everything but orthordox, D.L. boasts a hefty career in laboratory science, leadership, and social justice change. D.L. has earned degrees in Business Administration Economics and a Masters in Public Administration and Health. They serve as support to QTPOC folks as a member of various community committees focusing on wellness, homelessness, equity, and social change. Currently, they are Director of the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center for Grand Valley State University. D.L. continues to work from a lens of racial and social justice to support individuals and communities, in building their capacity to challenge internal and external systems of oppression to create sustainable change.
Megan Persons, Equity Enrollment Coordinator, Grand Rapids Public Schools
After graduating from Northern Michigan University in 2012, Megan began her teaching career with the Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS). She spent five years teaching high school English and College and Career Preparation at Innovation Central High School (ICHS) before transitioning to the role of School Improvement Facilitator/Assistant Principal at Westwood Middle School. In fall 2021, Megan assumed the position of Equity Enrollment Coordinator for GRPS.
An advocate of inclusivity for the entirety of her career, Megan has assisted in the establishment of school-based gender and sexuality alliances, pushed for policy reform, and facilitated professional development for educators throughout the county. Since 2019, she has served as Co-Chair and a lead facilitator of GRPS’s LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee. Megan has been trained through the Michigan Department of Education to lead “Safe and Supportive Schools” workshops, is a member of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce’s OutPro Council, and is a 2021 West Michigan Woman Brilliance Award recipient. In addition to her teaching credentials, Megan holds a graduate degree in Urban Education from Davenport University, and she was a successful participant of Harvard Graduate School’s New and Aspiring School Leaders program.
In her free time, you can find Megan playing soccer, riding her bike, or spending time with her family.
