Breakfast with Legislators

Breakfast with Legislators events provide Chamber members and their employees the opportunity to establish relationships with key decision makers and voice opinions on issues moving forward in Lansing. Networking and facilitated question-and-answer sessions offer firsthand information on upcoming legislation and House and Senate committee activities, prompting great dialogue between legislators and Chamber members.

This month we will be meeting at the Grand Rapids Chamber and will be joined by six members of the Michigan House of Representatives and one member of the Michigan Senate:

Rep. Thomas Albert Thomas Albert (Michigan) - Ballotpedia
Michigan House of Representatives District 86 (R)
Representative Thomas Albert was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2016 and represents the 86th District. He serves as chair of the House Appropriations committee and also serves on the Agriculture & Rural Development, Military & Veterans Affairs & State Police, and School Aid & Department of Education subcommittees. Rep. Albert is a proud West Michigan native, University of Michigan alumnus, and Marine Corps veteran.

Rep. Mark Huizinga
Michigan House of Representatives District 74 (R)
Representative Mark Huizinga was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2018. He has represented the 74th District since then and is the chair of the Higher Education and Community Colleges subcommittee. He also serves on the House Appropriations Committee, the Health & Human Services, School Aid & Department of Education, and Transportation subcommittees. Before taking office Rep. Huizinga served in senior management roles with Spectrum Health, Health Development International, and ProCare Systems.

Michigan House of Representatives District 88 (R)

Representative Luke Meerman was first elected to serve the 88th District in Michigan House of Representatives in November 2018, to represent the residents of Allendale, Georgetown, Tallmadge, Wright, Chester, Coopersville and Polkton townships in Ottawa County. He is the chairman for the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and vice-chairman of the Health Policy Committee. Meerman is also a fifth-generation dairy farmer and is active with the Ottowa County Farm Bureau.

Michigan House of Representatives District 72 (R)

Representative Johnson was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives 72nd District in 2016. He represents the citizens of Dorr, Leighton, Wayland and Gaines Townships as well as the cities of Kentwood and Wayland. He serves as chair for the committee on Oversight and as vice-chair of the Higher Education and Community Colleges Appropriations subcommittee. He also serves on the committees for Elections & Ethics, Judiciary, and Tax Policy. Johnson is a veteran of the United States Air Force. In addition to his military service, Rep. Johnson has worked as a substitute teacher and in the construction industry.

Michigan House of Representatives District 100 (R)

Representative VanSingel was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives 100th district in 2016. He represents the citizens of Lake, Oceana, and Newago counties. VanSingel is the chairman of the Transportation Appropriations subcommittee. He also serves as the Vice-Chair of the Environment, Great Lakes & Energy committee, as well as being a member on the Appropriations committees for Joint Capital Outlay, School Aid & MDE, and Military & Veterans & MSP. Rep. VanSingel worked in accounting prior to being elected to the Michigan House. He has degrees from Central Michigan University and Cornerstone University.

 

Rep. Tommy Brann
Michigan House of Representatives District 77 (R) Breakfast with Legislators 73

Tommy Brann was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2016. He represents the 77th District, which includes Byron Township and the city of Wyoming. Brann has been working in the restaurant business since the age of 17. At the age of 19, Tommy opened his restaurant “Tommy Brann’s Sizzling Steaks and Sports Grille”. He is also an author and song writer. Rep. Brann is on the House Appropriations committee, where he is chair of the Military & Veterans Affairs & State Police subcommittee. He also serves on the Corrections, School Aid & Department of Education, and Transportation subcommittees.

 

Sen. Winnie Brinks,
Michigan Senate District 29 (D)Policy on Tap 3

Senator Brinks was first elected to the Michigan Senate’s 29th District in 2018. Previously, Brinks served in the Michigan House of Representatives. She currently serves on the Energy & Technology, Environmental Quality, Health Policy and Human Services committees. Brinks grew up on a dairy farm. She is a graduate of Calvin College where she studied Spanish with a concentration in sociology. She currently lives in Grand Rapids with her husband, Steve and her three daughters.
