Westside Neighborhood Hosts National Night Out Celebration Tuesday

Superhero-themed family event to be hosted at Lincoln Park from 6-8pm

On Tuesday, August 3, John Ball Area Neighbors, West Grand Rapids Neighborhood Association, Silent Observer, and other partners will join millions of residents and law enforcement agencies across the country in supporting this year’s National Night Out at Lincoln Park.

The neighborhood theme, “Be a Superhero and Stand Up Against Crime,” will feature various family-friendly activities and resources to promote good crime prevention practices, and will take place at Lincoln Park from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. this Tuesday.

The nationwide, community-building campaign was originally launched in 1984 to build neighborhood camaraderie while promoting partnerships between local communities and police departments.

“National Night Out is a fun and safe space where people from all walks of life can come together and develop neighborly bonds,” said Chris Cameron, Executive Director of the Silent Observer Organization. “Building strong relationships between the community and public safety officials in a positive environment is key to creating safe neighborhoods.”

The free, outdoor event was limited to a “drive-thru” celebration last year but is back in full swing for 2021. Featuring local food vendors serving $2 tacos, pizza, and snow cones, the celebration is full of interactive and educational activities. Superheroes will be roaming the park while families can explore various kids’ activities, including the traveling animals from John Ball Zoo, story time and photo op with Captain Brown Beard, and the Beebots from Kids’ Food Basket. Vehicles from the Grand Rapids Police Department, the Grand Rapids Fire Department, and May Mobility will also be on display in the park’s east parking lot on Marion Avenue.

The Blood Bus will also be collecting blood donations for Versiti Blood Center of Michigan and can be found on the corner of Garfield and Marion. If you would like to donate, please register online at http://bit.ly/nationalnightoutdrive or call 866-642-5663. Individuals who preregister and donate will receive a $10 gift card.
