Chamber Member Perks: The Davenport University Tuition Discount
We want our Chamber members to get the biggest return on their investment as possible and we’re making it a goal to help members navigate the ins and outs of the different Chamber membership perks. Today’s highlighted perk: The Davenport University tuition discount.
If you’re hearing about this for this first time: All employees (including part-time) of a member organization, plus their dependents, receive a 20% discount on Davenport University tuition – and the application fee is waived. The 20% discount also applies to Davenport University’s Institute for Professional Excellence (IPEx) for individual courses (Chamber members only for IPEx courses). It’s as simple as that!
Hear it From a Member: Brian Behler of the JW Marriott
General Manager Brian Behler is in charge of the day-to-day operations for the successful hotel management of the JW Marriott in downtown Grand Rapids. The JW Marriott has been a member of the Chamber since pre-opening in 2007. “We joined the Chamber primarily for the business to business relationship, but there’s another side to it, as well.” said Behler. “There’s the more personal side of membership with benefits and add-ons like the Davenport discount.”
Behler is not only a graduate of the Chamber’s Leadership Grand Rapids (LGR) program, but his son, Spencer, was also able to benefit from the Davenport tuition discount. Spencer is currently in his senior year at Davenport University’s Digital Forensics program. “I think the level of education he is getting there is top notch, specifically with the Digital Forensics. They’re one of the few schools in the country that offer that program,” said Behler. “And using the discount was easy! All I had to do is prove where I work and verify that we’re a Chamber member.”
FUN FACT: Behler graduated from LGR in 2017. He joined because his boss, George Aquino (current Vice President of AHC+ Hospitality), went through the program ten years ago and Behler saw the program’s value and wanted the same opportunity for himself. He plans to send his second-in-command, Nicholas Remes, Assistant General Manager for the JW to Leadership Grand Rapids this year. The JW’s Director of Rooms, Norina Cadili, is also a graduate of our Emerging Leaders program.
Interview with Dr. Richard Pappas, President of Davenport University
On Davenport’s end, what motivated you to offer this tuition discount to Chamber members?
Davenport University has been a member of the Grand Rapids Chamber since it was first created in 1887. As an institution that has prepared individuals for careers in area businesses for more than 150 years, Davenport has an affinity for the Chamber and its member organizations. We are always seeking to partner with regional businesses and are excited to serve Chamber members through these tuition discounts.
What value does this bring to our community?
DU’s degree programs focus on the fastest growing career fields in business, technology, and health, such as accounting, international business, network management and security, cyber defense, digital forensics, and nursing. With DU’s MBA, Master of Management, Master of Science in Nursing, and other graduate degree programs, DU also is helping organizations prepare their future leaders.
Davenport’s Institute for Professional Excellence (IPEx) provides individual and corporate training, development and certification programs that emphasize practical skills. They are perfect for hard-working professionals who want to continue to grow in their careers.
We’ve heard that many of DU’s graduates find jobs soon afterward. Can you speak on this a little?
Davenport University provides the education, tools, and resources that students need to enter and excel in a career. Davenport prides itself on its knowledge of the marketplace, gained through constant monitoring and dialogue with business leaders. We are so confident that our degrees lead to careers that we offer an Employment Guarantee for accounting, nursing and network management and security. This Employment Guarantee was among the first in the U.S. and by 2020, up to a quarter of DU’s bachelor degree programs will be covered by this guarantee.
Our alumni also benefit from lifelong access to audit classes they have previously taken to help them remain current. They also get lifelong access to Career Services that will help them in their career progression.
Davenport even has a 95 percent graduate satisfaction rate because of the phenomenal service students receive from the moment they step on campus.
