Governor Whitmer Visits Chamber to Address Budget Proposal
The Grand Rapids Chamber was honored to host Governor Whitmer this afternoon for a dialogue with our members on the budget she presented to the Legislature yesterday.
At the Chamber, our top priorities are fixing infrastructure, closing the talent gap and cultivating a vibrant business climate. We applaud Governor Whitmer for presenting a bold budget strongly focused on addressing the problems facing the roads and our talent system.
Highlights of the budget recommendation:
- Roads: $2.5 billion more for roads by raising the gas tax 45 cents over 18 months
- Talent: A historic K-12 funding increase with a focus on raising post-secondary degree attainment from 44% to 60% for all Michiganders
- Tax: Increase the corporate income tax on small businesses to pay for a tax exemption for government pensions
We were thrilled to have Governor Whitmer engage with our members on these key issues. Members weighed in on the specifics of the road proposal, aligning the education system with employer needs and the impact the small business tax would have on their companies.
The Chamber will be taking the Governor’s budget proposals before our Board and policy committees. If you have feedback on how these budget proposals will impact you and your company, please contact our Government Affairs team.
We look forward to working with our members, the Michigan Legislature and the Administration to solve these challenges.
