H.R. 5 and S. 788 Equality Act
TO THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS:
The Grand Rapids Chamber strongly supports H.R. 5 and S. 788, the Equality Act, introduced by Representatives David Cicilline and Brian Fitzpatrick, and Senators Jeff Merkley and Susan Collins. It is a critical piece of bipartisan legislation, updating federal law to prohibit discrimination in the workplace and in commerce on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Grand Rapids Chamber is continually working to make Michigan the best place to do business; we advocate on the issues that matter to our members: a talented Michigan, strong infrastructure and a vibrant business climate.
Studies show that LGBT-inclusive communities and companies are more competitive. Inclusivity is vital to attracting and retaining top talent.
Not only is it the smart thing to do, it is the right thing to do. We believe everyone deserves the right to show up as their whole person in all aspects of their life. Equality under the law fosters an environment where America’s diverse workforce can reach its full potential without fear of discrimination.
The Equality Act brings us much closer to the inclusion we need to further extend the promise of equal opportunity that is the bedrock of the United States.
With the unprecedented backing of 70 percent of Americans, more than 280 members of Congress, 165 leading businesses and 288 organizations from across the country, now is the time to pass the Equality Act.
The Grand Rapids Chamber looks forward to the enactment of the Equality Act.
