Chamber Political Action Committee Update: 2018 Candidate Endorsement Process

The Chamber's Political Action Committee - April 2018 Update

On Wednesday, April 18, Steve Mitchell, a long-term Michigan pollster and Chairman of Mitchell Research & Communications, shared his insight into this coming election cycle with members of the Chamber President’s Club.

The timely topic helped launch the Chamber Political Action Committee’s (PAC) 2018 candidate endorsement process. The Chamber PAC, The Friends of West Michigan Business, is an important tool in identifying and supporting highly-qualified, pro-growth candidates for local and elected state elected office.

The PAC is funded by Chamber members who personally contribute private dollars and join the President’s Club, it is separate from Chamber membership dollars. The PAC Steering Committee, appointed by the Chamber’s Board of Directors, leads the endorsement process.

After identifying the races where the PAC will be issuing an endorsement, questionnaires and letters were sent to candidates in those races. The PAC Steering Committee and PAC contributors who volunteer to serve on interview teams will interview candidates seeking endorsement.

On June 5, the PAC Steering Committee will meet to consider the recommendations of the interview teams and make a recommendation to the Board of Directors. The Board will meet the same day and finalize the endorsements.

The Chamber PAC will issue more than 50 endorsements this year, with races ranging from Grand Rapids Public School Board of Education to Governor of Michigan. If you want to learn more, please contact Joshua Lunger at 616.901.5168.
