Critical Issues for a Competitive West Michigan

The Grand Rapids Chamber is focused on the issues that matter to our members, the job creators and engines of the economy. Our advocacy supports businesses of all sizes as we lead the community in creating a thriving and prosperous West Michigan for all.

These issues matter now. They will impact our economy and quality of life for decades to come if left unaddressed. Our key issues break down into three categories:

• A Vibrant Business Climate Powering Our Economy
• A Talented Michigan
• A Place to Call Home

A Vibrant Business Climate Powering Our Economy

The Grand Rapids area is home to a diverse set of industries. We are focused on the ease of doing business, advocating to minimize burdensome regulations and eliminating barriers to employment while supporting an inclusive workplace for all.

Key issues include:
• Health care affordability
• Infrastructure including a reliable, competitive energy system
• Unemployment system reform
• A competitive tax environment
• Sound budgeting and addressing unfunded liabilities
• Expansion of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act

A Talented Michigan

Our economic success depends on a strong education and talent system – from birth to career – to meet the demands of a future where we are continuing to grow in West Michigan. The Chamber advocates for policies that would boost student outcomes and enhance and grow our talent pool.

Key issues include:
• Going Pro Talent Fund expansion
• Improving our childcare system
• K-12 accountability
• Criminal justice reform

A Place to Call Home

Grand Rapids and Kent County are leaders in population and job growth. Our success has created new challenges, including increasing concerns over housing availability and affordability. We are also focused on strong local government leadership, being a welcoming community to ALL and successfully deploying once-in-a-lifetime federal relief dollars effectively. We’re focused on cross-sector solutions to make the Grand Rapids a place anyone can call home.

Key issues include:
• Supporting the efforts of Housing Next
• Local Government Leadership
• Federal Relief Spending
• Kent County Welcome Plan
