ATHENA Award Program

Dr. Marsha Rappley named 2010 ATHENA Award Recipient

The Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce will honor Marsha D. Rappley, M.D., Dean of the College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University as the 2010 ATHENA Award Recipient.

Over the past 30 years Dr. Rappley has advised and mentored more than sixty women from all walks of life, and helped them to understand that sometimes others see in us more than we see in ourselves. Her path from nurse’s aide to LPN to RN to MD is a model of the variety of paths that women take to leadership.

She takes her role in a leadership position in the community and profession very seriously.

Her recent awards include the Gold Humanism in Medicine Award, Distinguished Service award from FDA, Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Minority Medical Student Teaching Award and the Ray E. Helfer Teaching Award.

ATHENA Scholarships & ATHENA Scholarship Fundraiser 

One critical component of the ATHENA Award Celebration is the awarding of scholarships to women over the age of 30 who are pursuing higher education. The Grand Rapids ATHENA program was the first ATHENA program in the country to establish a scholarship program.
