The Chamber recognizes the need for Grand Rapids and West Michigan to play a more significant role in Washington. We have an opportunity to exercise our unique voice to advocate for issues and projects that are critical to our region’s success.
Our annual two-day trip to Washington D.C. takes business, civic, and community leaders of the West Michigan to meet with members of Congress, the Administration, and agencies on issues and projects affecting West Michigan business.
Every trip we have coordinated over the past few years has included more than 50 participants from West Michigan. During our time in Washington D.C. we have the opportunities to lobby Congress and the Administration in support of our region’s vitality and economic growth.
In 2014, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber hosted the DC Fly-In in conjunction with the US Chamber’s Small Business Summit. The 10th Annual America’s Small Business Summit brought together more than 800 business owners and chamber executives from across the country to network, hear from business and policy experts, and meet with their legislators on Capitol Hill.
2014 Confirmed speakers:
General Colin Powell, Former Secretary of State
Charlie Cook, Political analyst, who will be giving a preview of the 2014 midterm elections
Steve Case, the co-founder of AOL and well-known entrepreneur
Susan O’Malley, first female president of a professional sports franchise;
Jim Vandehei, the founder and CEO of Politico.
While the keynote speakers alone were reason enough to attend, the summit also featured a Governors Roundtable, a West Michigan reception on Capitol Hill, a Capitol Hill visit the following day and a special 10th anniversary reception at the Newseum.
