Community Foundation President Diana R. Sieger Named 2014 Athena Award Recipient

diana_blogThe Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce Diana R. Sieger, President of Grand Rapids Community Foundation, as the 2014 ATHENA® Award recipient in recognition of her outstanding leadership and support of women both within her organization and throughout the greater Grand Rapids community.

The prestigious ATHENA Award honors an individual who has demonstrated leadership in their professional field, mentored and opened doors of opportunities for women, and contributed time and talent to the community. Nine prominent community and business leaders were nominated for the award this year, the 25th year the award has been presented in the greater Grand Rapids community.

“Diana is a dedicated leader and truly an influential woman in Grand Rapids who not only serves this community and leads positive social change, but also strives to foster future leaders and create an inclusive, supportive culture within her organization,” said Rick Baker, President and CEO of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.

Sieger’s career extends over 40 years of passion for excellence and of making positive impact in every facet of community life. As president of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation for nearly 27 years, Sieger has led financial and strategic assistance on many difficult and key issues facing the area. Under her leadership, the community-based philanthropic organization increased in financial assets from $35 million in 19987 to more than $320 million in 2014—significantly raising the level of influence and reach of the Foundation within the community.

In addition, Sieger has implemented innovative practices for attracting and retaining high-performing talent at the Foundation by recognizing work-life balance, creating family-friendly policies and “kid-friendly” spaces, and encouraging staff to pursue their educational aspirations and personal development. Recently, the Chamber recognized the Community Foundation for its their sustained efforts and exemplary work in supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture.

Among her many accomplishments, Sieger counts being named as one of 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan by the Grand Rapids Business Journal in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014. In 2013, she was honored with the Women of Achievement and Courage Award by the Michigan Women’s Foundation as well as the Edward Frey Sr. Distinguished Achievement Award from Junior Achievement of West Michigan. She is a member of Inforum’s Inner Circle since 2010, listed among Who’s Who in America since 2004, and a recipient of the Distinguished Community Trustee Award (2001) and the YWCA Tribute Award (1995).

“The ATHENA is the pinnacle for awards for female leaders in our community and I’m honored to have been selected this year. Ensuring that established and emerging women leaders are heard, respected and have a seat at the table is something I am committed to influencing and working toward,” Sieger said.

Diana R. Sieger will be honored at a luncheon on Thursday, September 18 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Ambassador Ballroom, 187 Monroe Ave NW. The Chamber’s ATHENA Award Celebration begins at 11:30 a.m. and will also feature the presentation of the ATHENA Young Professional Award, which recognizes an emerging leader for their contributions to community, professional excellence and commitment to serve as a personal and professional role model for young women.
